Below is the peer-reviewed research behind this approach, presented honestly: what the evidence shows, and where its limits are.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<section>\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<h2>What the evidence shows, at a glance<\/h2>\n<p class=\"lead\">Four decades of research validate the scoliometer \/ ATR method, and more than a dozen studies confirm that smartphones reproduce it accurately.<\/p>\n<div class=\"facts\">\n<ul>\n<li>Smartphone scoliometer apps agree with the physical scoliometer to within roughly <b>1 degree<\/b>, with reliability (ICC) consistently <b>above 0.90<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li><b>Parents<\/b> taking measurements at home reached a <b>0.92 correlation<\/b> with a surgeon using a scoliometer (European Spine Journal, 2022).<\/li>\n<li>A deep-learning app reading a <b>single back photo<\/b> matched or exceeded spine surgeons for flagging curve severity and progression risk across <b>2,158 patients<\/b> (JAMA Network Open, 2023).<\/li>\n<li>The method is for <b>screening and monitoring<\/b> &mdash; it does not measure the Cobb angle or replace an X-ray for diagnosis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<h2>How to read this page<\/h2>\n<p class=\"lead\">A scoliometer &mdash; physical or smartphone &mdash; is a <strong>screening and monitoring aid<\/strong>, not a diagnostic device, and not a replacement for clinical assessment or X-ray when those are indicated. The studies below validate the underlying <em>method<\/em>: smartphone-based scoliometry and ATR measurement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"honest\"><strong>Plain-language summary:<\/strong> Smartphone scoliometer apps have repeatedly been shown to measure trunk rotation as accurately as the physical scoliometer doctors use in clinic &mdash; accurately enough that even parents can take reliable readings at home.
